Out of Darkness plans to provide a short-term, crisis stabilization safe house for exploited adult women. With construction almost complete, we are working to secure critical funding that will enable Out of Darkness to open the doors of the safe house. The goal is $38,000. $38,000 is needed to hire staff and provide operational costs once the doors open. We are scheduled to open this summer, so it's critical to reach this goal by mid-June.
There are more people enslaved today than at any other time in history, and yes, that includes right here in Central Ohio. In fact, Ohio is ranked #5 in the nation for the number of calls received through the National Human Trafficking Hotline. Lack of emergency housing, specifically for victims of commercial sexual exploitation, is one of the most identified gaps in service in Central Ohio. By opening the safe house, we will be able to offer a safe and secure place for the ladies when they need it the most and walk them through the next steps needed to achieve personal healing and restoration.
Just in one afternoon in the month of February, we had 3 calls from one of our partner organizations looking to place women into treatment. Without a safe house, we were unable to provide a period of stabilization and safety while connecting her with appropriate resources and long term programs according to her individual need. If the safe house would have been open, their stories could have turned out differently.
